Your Guide to the Rest of Summer in Stopford

August is almost here, bringing with it the annual scramble to make the most of the year’s remaining sunshine, warm weather and long evenings before autumn’s cooler days and darker nights set in. Soon, we’ll be swapping outdoor adventures for cosy film marathons and evenings spent reading by the fire. 

But, before you’re reaching for the blankets and hibernating for the winter, here’s everything happening in Stockport this month to help you squeeze every last drop out of summer. 

 

 

Saturday 2 August – Heaton Comedy Evening 

If you’re after a good laugh this month, Heaton’s comedy club has you covered. It’s hosting a huge night of stand-up featuring some of the UK’s fastest-rising comedians, including Silky, Maureen Younger, Luke Harrower and Michael Legge – and tickets will only set you back £13.20. 

The organisers, Comedy in a Van, promise “proper sweary swearing”, so it’s definitely one for the grown-ups. Between them, the comics have appeared on the BBC, performed to audiences around the world and earned praise from comedy heavyweights like John Bishop. 

 

 

Sunday 9 August – Stockport Krazy Soapbox Races  

One of Stockport’s biggest and definitely weirdest charity events is making a comeback. Set to be bigger than ever, if you’ve not been to the Krazy Soapbox Races, you’ve been missing out.  

For one day only, the streets of Stockport town centre are taken over as local businesses and teams race homemade soapboxes down the course, each one more ridiculous than the last. From wild costumes to bonkers designs, every entry has its own theme, making it just as entertaining to watch as it is to race. You can grab bites to eat and drink from the many different food stalls that will be stationed there and have a dance to live music, whilst you watch the race.

Sunday 16 August – Stopford House Party  

Held at the stunning brutalist square where Stopford House is located, get ready for a vibrant day filled with music, food, stalls of handcrafted goods and raft of activities for you to try.  

From 12pm to 7pm, you can get stuck into a range of creative activities, from trying your hand at ceramics and flower arranging to sharpening your artistic skills in a life drawing session. If you’re more green-fingered, you can make your own seed bombs and take a little piece of creativity home with you. 

 

 

Saturday 22 August – Arden Arms Hoedown 

Dust off your cowboy boots because the Wild West is heading to Stockport. The Arden Arms in Bredbury is throwing an authentic country hoedown, complete with live music, line dancing vibes and plenty of country classics to sing along to. So, grab your best cowboy hat, round up your mates and get ready for a full day of toe-tapping tunes from a packed line-up of live acts. 

When you need a break from the dancing, you can warm up around the bonfire, swap stories from the comfort of the hay bale seating or see who can hang on the longest with a ride on the bucking mechanical bull.

Sunday 23 August – Foodie Fridays British Street Food Awards  

This August, Foodie Fridays has been invited to host the Northern heat of the prestigious British Street Food Awards, bringing the best street food from all over the North, right here into Stockport.  

Expect 20 incredible food traders, handpicked from more than 3,000 applicants, all battling it out for a place in the National Final; a panel of celebrity judges will be on hand to crown the winner. It’s not just about the food either. There’ll be live music and plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained throughout the day, whilst you cheer on your favourite trader in the battle of the street foods.
