Stockport best for pubs according to national paper

April 15th 2026

The Telegraph has dropped its list of the UK’s top ten pub towns, and Stockport’s made the cut- getting some serious praise thanks to two standout pubs in particular.

The article was written by The Telegraph’s travel writer Will Hawkes, whose defining trait is his elaborate beer knowledge. He has created this ranking after spending time extensively searching and testing pubs up and down the country, to rank them into a list of the best 500.

He said that all of the towns that made the list had “a few things in common,” which included: a strong culture, affordable pints, and are “not over-engaged with the excesses of modernity, whether through choice or the misfortunes of economic history.”

With many pubs struggling to stay afloat amid the cost-of-living crisis, Stockport is bucking the trend. New pubs and bars continue to open regularly, it means Stopford now boasts over 220 independent pubs, many with their own unique offering and strong community-focused spaces.

The two pubs that were highlighted by Hawkes in the article were The Crown Inn on Heaton Lane, and The Magnet round the corner on Wellington Road North.

When describing the Stockport pubs, he said: “The Crown Inn, a handsome two-storey pub close to Stockport Station, could not be anywhere else other than northern England.

“It sits almost underneath the awesome 19th century viaduct that carries trains northward, while the interior is divided into four in the traditional northern fashion.”

He continued: “The beers good too, although in that regard it may not be Stockport’s best: The Magnet Freehouse, a five-minute walk away, had some of the best beer in England, let alone the northwest.”
