One of THE most fun family days out in Stopford returns and the best bit – it’s FREE!

April 23rd 2026

Krazy Races Soapbox Derby returns to Stockport this summer at St Peter’s Square. This much-loved kart race will see a new wave of lively competitors take to the course.

Picture crazy costumes, silly characters, wonky karts and 20 to 40 teams all competing to be crowned as Stockport’s soapbox champions. Teams of two from local businesses and charities are challenged to design their own soapbox kart which must withstand a 350m course filled with obstacles, chicanes and other unknown surprises.

The event which is FREE for spectators usually pulls in around 15,000 people, with food and drinks from local vendors.

The soapboxes are non-motorised buggies, handmade by local businesses and brands from simple materials that are all designed in their own crazy unique way.  Whilst they have breaks and steering wheels, they rely entirely on gravity for their movement, with the courses all running downhill.

There are two awards up for grabs: Best Dressed and Best Showmanship. Previous years have featured soapboxes and costumes inspired by everything from a Ghostbusters Ectomobile, a tree trunk, a shark and a Robinson’s brewery bottle, to name a few. It’s this mix of creativity and chaos that keeps crowds coming back year after year, eager to see what outrageous designs will roll out next.

The event is set up with the support of Totally Stockport, a Business Improvement District (BID) company dedicated to supporting businesses in the borough. The last event was held in 2024 and raised a whopping £20,000 for local charities, with the hopes to raise even more this year.

So far 13 teams have been entered, including:
