Stopford’s Drywave on a mission to launch new youth space

March 22nd 2026

Stockport-based charity Drywave has successfully raised £11,000 after hosting a fundraiser to help open a new community hub, which will provide creative outlets and support for vulnerable young people.

Few young people have a tougher start in life than those that pass through Drywave’s Hero Journey. Each member has a similar experience growing up in the care system, often moving from one care home to another.

Without stability or support, many of them began developing difficult coping habits, but everything changes when they meet Ben, founder of Drywave and the Hero’s Journey programme.

DJ Dawz, is one shining example who has been through the programme and now travels across the UK hosting his ‘sober events,’ promoting rave culture in a safe, drug-free way.

Such was the impact of the programme that the team are now raising funds to create a safe space for young people in Stockport who have been failed by the system. They’ve already gained investment from one of the UK’s most recognisable entrepreneurs, Simon Squibb.

And 8 April raised an additional £11,000 to get the ‘DIY SOS challenge’ style project off the ground.

Ben said:

“They say it takes a village to raise a child. Unfortunately, we’ve been closing the village doors to young people, and they have no safe space to go. That’s why Stockport needs The Culture Lab.”

We’ve already got the space, and we are so excited that we have been able to secure the money to help make this dream a reality. It will be a place to come together: a gym, a recording studio, creative workshops and a place to study and work. A place for young people to find their belonging and be inspired to get more from life.”
