How to celebrate the Lunar New Year in Stockport

February 2nd 2026

With the 2026 Lunar New Year just around the corner, Stockport is getting ready to mark the occasion with a packed programme of events across the town.

The Year of the Horse begins on Tuesday 17th February and is often linked with big changes, independence and bold moves – something Stockport is more than ready to embrace. This year is extra special too, as it’s more specifically the Year of the Fire Horse, bringing an added sense of passion, confidence and risk-taking with the celebrations.

Falling in the February half-term break, there’s a list of must-see events on in the town, giving locals the perfect opportunity to dive into the sights, sounds and flavours of the East Asian culture.

Gallop and Glow at the Royal Nawaab

Kicking off the Roster is the iconic Stockport pyramid, now known as the Royal Nawaab, with a fun Paint ‘n’ Sip session on the 30th of January. Guided by a professional artist, guests will be invited to paint a portrait of a horse whilst enjoying a cheeky tipple of their choosing. Funk beats from a live DJ will fill the night, setting the mood as you unwind and unleash your creative talents.

Whether you’re a seasoned artist or can barely draw a stick figure, it doesn’t matter; this is all about relaxing, connecting with new people, and tapping into your creative side.

Merseyway Shopping Centre Events

For the 7th and 8th of February, Merseway Shopping Centre will be reimagined into an authentic East Asian street market scene. With over 50 market traders selling delicious food, authentic homeware and ornate gifts, it’s a feast for the senses and a celebration of vibrant culture.

Running from 9am to 5pm, attendees can expect to experience essences of Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia, in the heart of Stockport centre. As well as perusing the many artisan goods, shoppers will be immersed in eastern cultural music played with traditional instruments such as the guqin and the shamisen. This will be accompanied by an energetic Lion Dance performance to open the festival, representing good fortune, resilience and good starts.

This event has been organised by EatGoodWest who run the Asian markets at St Mary’s Church.

Chinese New Year Extravaganza at Stockport Plaza

To finish the Lunar New Year with a bang, take yourself down to Stockport Plaza for a showstopping event produced by the Jinlong Culture and Performing Arts Group. The show will host dazzling acrobats and a vibrant Lion Dance that is full of colour, energy and booming drums, bringing the stage to life.

It’s a must-see experience, igniting the explosive rhythm, artistry and dance of this legendary group. This performance is a rare opportunity to see centuries old traditions come to life right before your eyes.
