Hollywood Comes to Stockport as the Plaza Takes Centre Stage in DC’s Clayface

Stockport is having its Hollywood moment, with the iconic Plaza cinema being transformed into a glamorous movie premiere for DC Studios’ upcoming horror film Clayface.

The historic venue, located on Mersey Square in the heart of Stockport, became the setting for a fictional red-carpet event during filming in September 2025. Complete with a red carpet, bright lights and specially created film posters, the Plaza was all dolled up for its moment in the spotlight.

For anyone passing through Stockport town centre during filming, the sight of the Plaza dressed for a Hollywood-style premiere was a sight for sore eyes.

The Art Deco cinema and theatre, which first opened in 1932, was given a starring role in a scene featuring a fictional film called The Light Between. Passers-by were able to see posters displayed outside the venue promoting the imaginary production.

Showcasing the character and architectural beauty that make Stockport special, the Plaza became part of the story, helping create the atmosphere of a major cinematic event rather than simply serving as a backdrop.

Bringing one of Batman’s most intriguing villains into the spotlight in a darker, horror-focused story, Clayface is directed by James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries, alongside Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan.

The story centres around Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries, an actor whose face is disfigured, and he turns into a scientist who transforms his body into clay, therefore becoming Clayface.

Making extensive use of locations across the North West, the fictional world of Gotham City saw Liverpool’s streets and landmarks transformed, while Manchester and Stockport also played their part.

This is far from the first time that Stockport has been used as a filming location for top productions – the borough is famous for its proximity to key studios and facilities, and for its variety of filming locations – historic streetscapes, urban high-rises, verdant countryside and more.
