Family trio restore historic Stockport pub

March 17th 2026

The Crown Inn, a pub which dates back to 1877, had been in decline for a decade but Father and Son, Chris and Alan Gent and daughter-in-law Amy Barker, have recently given listed building a successful revival.

Nothing beats a good local boozer and we’re a little spoilt for choice around Stopford Park. But located right in front of the Viaduct, The Crown Inn is one well worth the steps with its triumphant return causing quite a stir back in August.

Holding many of its original Victorian features with five distinct rooms centred around a classic wooden vault right at the heart of the building, the pub was originally three terraced houses that were reconstructed into one.

Chris, Alan and Amy had been eyeing the pub up for quite some time and when it closed at the start of 2025, they seized the opportunity to get the keys, doing most of the improvements themselves. From deep cleaning the grime and stripping away years of paint they’ve even replaced the shattered Victorian glass panels. The rooms have all been upholstered with classic leather seating, the original ornate wooden features and a newly designed colour palette that enhances the pub’s timeless character.

It’s believed to be one of the oldest standing free houses in the Greater Manchester borough and it you’re a fan of the golden stuff; it offers a large lineup of cask-beer pumps with some additional taps free from any brewery ties to keep people coming back in.

The family have reignited the lively atmosphere and community feel with monthly quiz nights and regular music acts and with plans to add an outdoor bar into their vast beer garden, The Crown Inn is only going to get better and better.
